How have Australian scientists handled the difficult task of keeping us informed about the unfolding nuclear disaster in Japan?

Only a few Australian scientists have featured repeatedly in the media. The most prominent have been Professor Aidan Byrne from the Australian National University, RMIT Chancellor Dr Ziggy Switkowski and Professor Barry Brook from the University of Adelaide.

A clear pattern is evident — those with the greatest ideological attachment to nuclear power have provided the most inaccurate commentary.

The best of the bunch has been Byrne. He has presented the facts as he understands them and has willingly acknowledged major information gaps.

Switkowski has been gently spinning the issue, repeatedly reassuring us that lessons will be learned and improvements made. However, history shows that nuclear lessons are not properly learned.

The OECD's NEA notes that “lessons may be learned but too often they are subsequently forgotten, or they are learned but by the wrong people, or they are learned but not acted upon”.

The NEA says the pattern of the same type of accident recurring time and time again at different nuclear plants needs to be “much improved”.

The situation in Japan illustrates the point — it has become increasingly obvious over the past decade that greater protection against seismic risks is necessary. But the nuclear utilities haven't wanted to spend the money, and the Japanese nuclear regulator and the government haven't forced the utilities to act.

Brook is a strident nuclear power advocate and host of the Brave New Climate website, which received more than one million hits in the first week after the crisis.

Brook has egg on his face. Make that an omelette. He has maintained a running commentary in the media and on his website insisting that the situation is under control and that there is no reason for concern.

His message remained unchanged: even as it was revealed that efforts to cool the nuclear reactor cores were meeting with mixed success; even as deliberate and uncontrolled radiation releases occurred; even as explosions occurred; even as 200,000 people were evacuated; even as a fire led to spent nuclear fuel releasing radiation directly to the environment; and even as radiation monitors detected alarming jumps in radioactivity near the reactors and low levels of radiation as far away as Tokyo.

On March 12, the day after the earthquake and tsunami, Brook came out swinging, insisting: “There is no credible risk of a serious accident.”

That afternoon, after the first explosion at Fukushima, Brook made numerous assertions, most of which turned out to be wrong: "The risk of meltdown is extremely small, and the death toll from any such accident, even if it occurred, will be zero.

“There will be no breach of containment and no release of radioactivity beyond, at the very most, some venting of mildly radioactive steam to relieve pressure.

“Those spreading FUD [fear, uncertainty and doubt] at the moment will be the ones left with egg on their faces. I am happy to be quoted forever after on the above if I am wrong ... but I won't be.

“The only reactor that has a small probability of being ‘finished’ is unit one. And I doubt that, but it may be offline for a year or more."

On the night of March 12, Brook said: “When the dust settles, people will realise how well the Japanese reactors — even the 40-year-old one — stood up to this incredibly energetic earthquake event.”

The dust is finally settling and it seems likely that four reactors will be write-offs.

On March 13, Brook said of the unfolding disaster: “I don't see the ramifications of this as damaging at all to nuclear power's prospects.”

Yet within days of the start of the nuclear crisis, Germany, Switzerland and China announced that their nuclear power plans would be reconsidered in light of Fukushima.

The Labor Party and the Coalition in Australia seem to have abandoned their interest in developing nuclear power here.

On March 14, when the second explosion at Fukushima occurred, Brook was still insisting that “the nuclear reactors have come through remarkably well”.

That evening, half a dozen people were banned from posting comments directly on the Brave New Climate website. True, some of their comments were silly and inaccurate, but by those criteria Brook ought to have banned himself.

With a fire at Fukushima spewing radioisotopes directly into the environment, Brook rallied the pro-nuclear lobby, arguing: “Now, more than ever, we must stand up for what we believe is right.”

But cracks were starting to emerge by the evening of March 15. Brook acknowledged an “ongoing crisis situation”, banned another 40-50 “random nobodies” from posting comments directly on his website, and quoted Rudyard Kipling: If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken / Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools.

One contributor to Brook's website said: “Unfortunately, Prof. Brook has really abdicated a neutral position on this event. His clear support of nuclear power seems to have impacted his critical thinking skills. Every time he states something in this crisis is 'impossible', it seems to happen the next day.”

Finally, on March 17, with Brave New Climate web hits over the preceding week approaching one million, came a belated mea culpa.

Brook said on his website: “My initial estimates of the extent of the problem, on March 12, did not anticipate the cascading problems that arose from the extended loss of externally sourced AC power to the site, and my prediction that 'there is no credible risk of a serious accident' has been proven quite wrong as a result.

“It remains to be seen whether my forecast on the possibility of containment breaches and the very low level of danger to the public as a result of this tragic chain of circumstances will be proven correct.”

Yet even as he mea-culparised, Brook continued spinning.

In the same web-post, he uncritically reproduced this from the Nuclear Energy Institute: “Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yukio Edano, said earlier today a radiation level of 33 millirem per hour was measured about 20 kilometers from the Fukushima Daiichi plant earlier this morning. He said that level does not pose an immediate health risk.”

But that dose equates to almost 3,000 millisieverts a year, compared to the annual allowable limit for members of the public of just one millisievert per year. And keep in mind this is 20 kilometers from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

It is by no means a negligible dose and it seems increasingly likely that collective human exposure to radiation from Fukushima will be significant — a great deal less than exposure from Chernobyl fallout, but significant nonetheless.

Andrew Bolt at the Herald Sun has been urging people to read the “marvellously sane and cool explanation” of the Fukushima crisis from “our friend Professor Barry Brook”.

Both Bolt and Brook claim that no more than 50 people died from the Chernobyl catastrophe. The scientific estimates of the Chernobyl death toll range from 9,000 to 93,000.

Brook has spread misinformation as far and wide as the Fukushima reactors have spread radiation over the past week. With the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster falling on April 26, he will likely continue spinning.

This sad situation proves yet again that some of the most unscientific, anti-scientific jiggery pokery comes from scientists themselves.

That history can be traced back to the British nuclear bomb tests in Australia, when ideologically-driven scientists peddled whatever nonsense their political masters asked them to about the radiation fallout.

Former Senior Nuclear Engineer
with General Electric, the worlds
largest supplier of nuclear equipment.
Mr. Minor is now a leading
Californian anti-nuclear activist and
was a consultant for the film "China
Syndrome".

In 1976 Minor with two other senior
engineers from General Electric
resigned because they had come to
believe that nuclear energy represented
a "profound threat to man". Together
the three experts had 54 years
experience in the nuclear industry. Greg
Minor is interviewed by Mike Rann.

Rann: What prompted your decision to
resign from General Electric.

Minor: Well, it was a series of events
that happened over several years, but
some of the primary reasons include the
fact that I began to see the link between
the nuclear reactor programme we are
using for commercial power and the
weapons problem which is being
proliferated around the world. There
were also a series of accidents and
problems occurring, such as the
Browns Ferry incident in Alabama. This
was a plant I had worked on and it came
dangerously close to the accident we
are all trying to prevent.

Rann: What actually happened at
Browns Ferry?

Minor: Browns Ferry was a plant
where we had done very careful and
improved design to try to prevent a
single event from wiping out all the
emergency systems that are used to
protect the reactor and protect the
public from an accident. But what had
basically happened was that a single
event, a fire caused by a lighted candle
being used by an electrician checking
airflow in the cable spreading room -
wiped out 1,600 cables which connect
the control room with the reactor. In
doing so, the fire - which burned for
seven hours - wiped out all the safety
functions of the emergency core cooling
systems that are normally called on in an
emergency condition to save the reactor
from a dangerous situation. Fortunately
it didn't quite come to the condition
where it needed those emergency core
cooling systems. If it had, they would not
have been available. (Two of Browns
Ferry reactors, supplying 15% of the
total electricity demand for the huge
Tennessee Valley Authority, had to be
"scrammed" when erratic readings
began to appear on the controls.
Browns Ferry was out of action for

many months and repairs cost tens of
millions of dollars. Until the Three Mile
Island/Harrisburg incident in April 1979,
the Browns Ferry incident was regarded
by nuclear critics and advocates alike as
potentially the most serious incident in
the history of the nuclear industry.)

Rann: The Browns Ferry incident was
really the culmination of a number of
very silly mistakes, particularly human
error. If the safety and control systems
could be made more foolproof, would
this remove most of your doubts about
nuclear power?

Minor: Well, I think the thing we learnt
from the Browns Ferry plant was that
you cannot make them more foolproof.
The thing that happens is that human
element. Human error in either design
oversight or the problems we didn't
foresee in designing the plant, or in the
manufacturing where a manufacturer
didn't follow the quality procedures or
the installation procedures, or
maintenance problems. It was a
maintenance problems that happened
to catch Browns Ferry. But it could be
any of those that would produce the
accident in some other plant, regardless
of how carefully you think you have
designed it.

Rann: Supporters of nuclear power
say it is cleaner than other forms of
power generation. They say it is less
wasteful, less environmentally
disruptive. When you look at the track
T record of nuclear power generation over
the years, isn't the Browns Ferry
incident really the exception that proves
the rule: the rule being that nuclear
power is efficient and pretty well safe?

Minor: Well, you have to be very careful
in making that statement about
cleanliness. A nuclear reactor is only
clean if it operates exactly as it is
designed and these incidents around
the United States and around the world
where reactors have released radio-
activity into the environment, which they
are not designed to release, and which ·
really overrides the rule of cleanliness
they all like to speak about. The Browns
Ferry incident was, as far as proving the
rule that reactors are safe and clean, I
would say, quite the opposite. It proves
that they are vulnerable and they were
very lucky that this reactor accident
didn't go all the way.

Rann: What about the potential
benefits? Most proponents of nuclear
energy would concede that the risk can
never be zeroed, but don't the benefits
from nuclear power more than

compensate for what the proponents
describe as a very slight risk?

Minor: In my opinion they do not. The
risks are so large that it is hard to put it
on a scale that we normally think of in
any mechanical or technical disaster.
The risks of a nuclear accident can be so
devastating and so widespread and last
such enormously long periods of time.
We are talking about thousands and
thousands of years of contamination of
an area which may make it
uninhabitable forever. These are
dangers of a scale we do not normally
think of.

Rann: What sort of catastrophe, then,
could have resulted from the Browns
Ferry incident?

Minor: The danger at Browns Ferry
was that during the process of trying to
get this reactor under control, when it

experienced this devastating fire which
was burning up the control cables, the
operators had to relieve the pressure
inside the reactor and in doing so they
had to manually open some valves
which normally they would not open.
But in manually opening those valves
they released the pressure but they also
lost a large part of the cooling water that
normally covers the reactor core, and
that's the concern. Because it you lose
the cooling water and it gets below the
surface of the core, then you begin to
have core melting and the danger
would be that this core melting would
release radioactive material which was
contained in there. If it went on further to
melt out of the pressure vessel and out of
the containing building, in a "China
Syndrome" situation, then you would
have that radio-activity released to the
public and the environment. And that
would be a very, very serious accident.

The nuclear Russopeans of the US, UK, Australia and other dummy nations will spend, or will have spent, extremely large amounts of national budgets, talents and energies on ludicrous military nuclear projects, thereby almost completely depriving their national economies and societies of any semblance of good health, rational prosperity and natural national defence (living in Harmony with Nature). Therefore there will be nothing worth sticking up for in these societies, nothing worth defending or living for, nothing to regard as a legitimate viable life form, as a legitimate society.
In a small window in geologic time, when offending Russopean societies try to deploy and use nuclear weapon terrorist arsenals, certain unusual objects and activities will intervene : to deter and suspend all offensive human-developed nuclear weapons of mass destruction. Perhaps this will take the form of
- Loss of electric power to offensive fascist military installations.
- Gravitational anomalies that destroy aircraft or ships.(Electric power will be drained away, or human-conceived "laws of nature" will be circumvented by Nature; and human science, religion and governmentalists will be unable to explain these miracles to the Public.)
- Mass failure of flights of missiles, military planes and related satellites used for nuclear weapon launches and observation of "enemy" forces.
- Loss of "good weather" for any nuclear or military-related activity: perhaps giant category NINE cyclones, hurricanes or typhoons; or specialised attack tornadoes, sudden extreme lightning/wind storms or massive earthquakes (Weather Underground).
After these events, and adequate quite natural protection to the planet has taken place, to prevent any nuclear conflict from becoming a major conflagration that would severely injure Planet Earth and the majority of People, the offending Russopean countries (US, UK, Australia, Canada, France, etc.) will be completely overcome by opposing militaries in Russia, China and their allies. But this is just another step in the process.

Uranium Mining Tax : How High the Price for Race War ?

Since April 2010 we have been barraged by talk of tax on the Mining Industry that includes some of the most treacherous and gluttonous monopoly governments and businesses on the planet e.g. BHP and BP (the Big Huge Pig and the Big Pig).

We Tried to Warn U.Rann.ium

Immediately after South Australia Premier Mike U.Rann.ium's Australia Day 2007 speech in Elder Park, Premier U.Rann.ium, and a half-dozen of camera laden press people, scaled a small hill beside the stage, to listen to a smokey noisy display of futile fireworks, that were very hard to see, since the fireworks were being sent skyward at about noon, on a bright sunny day.

With no problem, I personally strode quickly up to the group, stepped right beside Premier U.Rann.ium, and clearly clamoured in his left ear

"NO Nuclear Fireworks Thank You !"

Premier U.Rann.ium slightly nodded his head in agreement, then shut his iron curtain of attention to the cautious words I was saying, and continued staring upwards, mesmerised by the puffs and pops of fireworks above.

Now, almost two and a half years later, the uranium industry in Australia has sent its first shipment of yellowcake to socialist communist mainland China where it will be made into fireworks... of the most deadly variety.

And the civilisation of China has a long history of making and using fireworks.

For China to be following the same deadly trek into the nuclear horizon, that has been a disaster for other countries, will sadly and horribly increase the chances for proliferation and mass production of nuclear weapons.

And it will paint Planet Earth with more radioactive toxicity, in places that have the most dense people population centres, and the most active export economy in the world.

Thirteen protestors, a media person and a minor have issued a claim against the South Australian police for violence, brutality and the deprivation of liberty.

The claim arose from a protest action at the Beverley Uranium Mine, in which local and STAR force police officers reacted with extreme violence, using batons, capsicum spray and vehicles to subdue environmentalists.

An 11-year-old local Adnyamathanha girl was sprayed with crowd control agent and made blind, a young man was targeted by police and beaten by 8 officers in full view of the assembled group, and the police used crowd control spray on the fleeing crowd. About 30 people were locked in a shipping container after their arrest and alledgedly sprayed while in the box.
